Close your Eyes, and run your finger nail Side to side on the journal.. if you can feel anything like 'Clicks' aginst your Fingernail End, then it MUST be dressed.. Somehow.. Another way of putting it.. If your Fingernail can 'Feel' what your eyes are seeing, then is needs dressing.. ALSO.. after you get the shaft dressed ( ground or what ever ), do that same thing again.. you should feel NOTHING on your fingers, or fingernails.. if you do then it's wrong.. I've had cranks come back from grinding that have 'Waves' ground into them.. NOPE!.. not good.. If you can get the Shaft Dressed with paper, or a hand stone ( BTDT ) then you can shim the Back side of the Bearings with Aluminum Foil to get the Clearances Proper.. Sounds Hick, but that is an Old School trick .. and you have to be shown how to shim a bearing from someone thats done it before.. AND you had better be good with Plastigauge and VERY patient, else you'll get it too tight, and things go bad FAST.. Cj
